Always treat the future as now!

By Strive Masiyiwa  Always treat the future as now! ____"Before anything else, preparation is the key to success..."* The other day as I read your comments here, I came across this question: “Strive Masiyiwa what's the current position of Liquid Telecoms with regard to Artificial Intelligence? What's your word to Africa regarding Artificial Intelligence and the need to fast follow it?” I’m sure some of you who saw Innocent Madanhire's question thought to remind him about the extensive interview I did with James Manyika, Senior Vice President of Alphabet, the parent company of Google last year. Just in case, he didn’t see it, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXiVw1jZybA As James noted in the interview, I have been talking about Artificial Intelligence in my own tech circles for at least 15 years. As a professional engineer, I make it my business to stay current in developments in my field, as you would expect say a doctor to remain current in

4 Questions To Help You Discover The Purpose Of Your CV

1. Who do you expect will read your CV? Believe it or not, most job applications are not initially reviewed by a human being. Instead, an electronic system will scan your job application for keywords and skills. If you are fortunate enough to have an actual human read your CV, the design can either hurt or harm you, depending on its effectiveness and readability. Keep in mind that HR professionals may not be familiar with all industry or job-related acronyms, so use both the acronyms and the actual words. Managers will pay more attention to your specific accomplishments to try to determine if you would be an asset, so make sure these are prominently featured. 2. Which industry are you targeting? If you are open to a variety of industries, this point does not apply. But if you are seeking a position in the manufacturing industry, for example, industry keywords need to be included in your CV. This will increase your chances of your CV being picked from a pool of others, especially if the

11 Unexpected Health Benefits Of Love (Infographic)

The mind-body connection is, without a doubt, essential to our health and well-being, and plenty of science has emerged in recent years to illustrate just how significant it can be. There are a number of great examples, ranging from quantum physics to the placebo effect, that make clear why this topic really needs some serious attention from the medical industry. Unfortunately, the medical industry today is dominated by pharmaceutical companies — a growing concern among many professionals, as a number of cases of scientific fraud have emerged over the decades. “The medical profession is being bought by the pharmaceutical industry, not only in terms of the practice of medicine, but also in terms of teaching and research. The academic institutions of this country are allowing themselves to be the paid agents of the pharmaceutical industry. I think it’s disgraceful.” – (source)(source) Arnold Seymour Relman (1923-2014), Harvard Professor of Medicine and former Editor-in-Chief of the New E

5 tips to sell the most on an online marketplace

Thousands of retailers in Kenya are now selling online having listed their products on different e-commerce websites, some of the retailers have physical stores and are looking to bridge the gap between offline and online sales while others are selling entirely from home. An online marketplace is a platform that allows retailers to list their products on an e-commerce website, update stock, monitor sales as well as pending, shipped and cancelled orders on their own. The seller can choose to retain the products and deliver to the e-commerce company once an order is placed in what is referred to as drop shipping or the seller could allow the company to keep the products in their warehouse for a period of time within which if the items are not sold he could collect them. To sell on the website, the products need to be new, unused, unopened in original packaging and must include original manufacturer’s warranty.     The seller will then upload the product images with the description before

Mentally Strong People: The 13 Things They Avoid

1. Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves. You don’t see mentally strong people feeling sorry for their circumstances or dwelling on the way they’ve been mistreated. They have learned to take responsibility for their actions and outcomes, and they have an inherent understanding of the fact that frequently life is not fair. They are able to emerge from trying circumstances with self-awareness and gratitude for the lessons learned. When a situation turns out badly, they respond with phrases such as “Oh, well.” Or perhaps simply, “Next!” 2. Give Away Their Power. Mentally strong people avoid giving others the power to make them feel inferior or bad. They understand they are in control of their actions and emotions. They know their strength is in their ability to manage the way they respond. 3. Shy Away from Change. Mentally strong people embrace change and they welcome challenge. Their biggest “fear,” if they have one, is not of the unknown, but of becoming complacent and stagnant. An en

Press Statement By Senator Kipchumba Murkomen On NYS Scandal

Press Statement By Senator Kipchumba Murkomen – February 24th 2016 I have seen, through Social Media, an affidavit that has been attributed to former Cabinet Secretary, Anne Waiguru and I wish to state as follows: At the material time stated on the affidavit, Ben Gethi approached the Law Firm of Sing’oei, Murkomen & Sigei Advocates for representation at the formative stages of the NYS investigations and in due course he moved on to other law firms. As lawyers, we are sworn to provide legal services to anyone that comes to us. Constitutionally, everyone is entitled to legal representation and is presumed innocent, until proven guilty, including the former CS herself. I wish to also make it clear that at no time was the law firm Sing’oei, Murkomen & Sigei Advocates a contractor or supplier of NYS. At no time did I threaten, intimidate or harass any public officer or civil servant. I’m also not aware of any police report that has been filed to indicate that I threatened anyone in

10 Troubling Habits of Unhappy People

Happiness comes in so many different forms that it can be hard to define. Unhappiness, on the other hand, is easy to identify; you know it when you see it, and you definitely know when it’s taken ahold of you. Unhappiness is lethal to everyone around you, just like second-hand smoke. The famous Terman Study from Stanford followed subjects for eight decades and found that being around unhappy people is linked to poorer health and a shorter life span. Happiness has much less to do with life circumstances than you might think. A University of Illinois study found that people who earn the most (more than $10 million annually) are only a smidge happier than the average Joes and Janes who work for them. Life circumstances have little to do with happiness because much happiness is under your control—the product of your habits and your outlook on life. Psychologists from the University of California who study happiness found that genetics and life circumstances only account for about 50 percen

A VIRTOUS LOVE STORY

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived; Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all repaired their boats and left. Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment. When the island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said “Richness, can you take me with you?” Richness answered, “No, I can’t. There is a lot of silver in my boat. There is no place here for you.” Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. “Vanity, please help me!” “I can’t help you Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat,” Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, “Sadness, let me go with you.” “Oh….Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself.” Happiness passed by Love too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her! Suddenly there was a voic

PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY

Once A professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see; asked the students, “How much do you think this glass weighs?’50gms!’ ?….’100gms!’ ……’125gms’ ……the students answered. I really don’t know unless I weigh it,’ said the professor, ‘but, my question is: What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?’ Nothing’ the students said. EIGHT LIES OF A MOTHER

1) This story begins when I was a child: I was born poor. Often we hadn’t enough to eat. Whenever we had some food, Mother often gave me her portion of rice. While she was transferring her rice into my bowl, she would say, “Eat this rice, son! I’m not hungry.” 2) As I grew, Mother gave up her spare time to fish in a river near our house; she hoped that from the fish she caught, she could give me a little bit more nutritious food for my growth. Once she had caught just two fish, she would make fish soup. While I was eating the soup, mother would sit beside me and eat the what was still left on the bone of the fish I had eaten. My heart was touched when I saw it. Once I gave the other fish to her on my chopstick but she immediately refused it and said, “Eat this fish, son! I don’t really like fish.” 3) Then, in order to fund my education, Mother went to a Match Factory to bring home some used matchboxes which she filled with fresh matchsticks. This helped her get some money to cover our

Commercialization of the institution of marriage and its negative impacts

By Salah Abdi Sheikh Before I decided to dabble in politics, I was essentially a commentator on social issues especially touching on the Somali Community of Kenya. I consider myself, some of sort of expert on my people. When, a journalist asked me to introduce myself, I said my name and the journalist finished my sentences saying and “you love the Somali people of Northern Kenya”. So today, let’s discuss a subject that is close to everyone’s heart; love, or rather the institution of marriage. The Somalis have made that institution a business enterprise. Parents want to control their children’s choice of spouses to details that are sometimes illogical. We are raising a generation of girls that expect gold and dollars for mahr and a generation of boys and girls who will never enter into a marriage contract knowing the costs involved. We are raising people whose hearts have been broken by disappointments that they have no hand in. The increase in divorce among the young newly married is b

MWALIMU Dida’s most memorable punch lines

1. If you want to be healthy, eat when you feel pangs of hunger; I do not know who brought these eating schedules with lunch, and dinner. When you are hungry, you do not fill up your belly with food; you need a third of food, a third of water then the other third is for breathing space. 2. The problem with Tana River is that leaders there are devil worshippers! 3. I just expanded my class from 40 students to 40 million Kenyans. I want to teach them that they cannot survive on hide and seek games, cry when people cry and laugh when people laugh. 4. Shikuku used to say that during the KANU regime, what was eaten up used to trickle down. Under this government, they eat more than KANU and nothing trickles down. 5. If Raila is true to his principles of social democracy, how comes many of the people he associated with in the Pentagon have left his team? You cannot start a team of 5 then end up with 4 against you. That’s not social democracy! 6. If your football team is losing then you change

There is no shortcut to maturity, Africa should be recolonized – Trump

American business mogul Donald Trump has said that Africa needs to be recolonized. This time around he has directed his anger to African leaders who according to Trump, have failed to exercise leadership and are keeping their people in worse conditions. Speaking yesterday in Nebraska, Trump said that Africans are slaves living like slaves in their own land yet they claim they are independent. Trump was responding to a question by a South African journalist on whether he thinks African leaders were right to seek mass withdrawal from the Hague based International Criminal Court. “It is shameful for African leaders to seek exit from ICC. In my view, these leaders want to have all the freedom to oppress their poor people without anyone asking them a question. I think there is no shortcut to maturity and in my view, Africa should be recolonized because Africans are still under slavery. Look at how those African leaders change constitutions in their favour so that they can be live presidents

This is What It’s Like to Be an ‘Ultra Rich Asian Girl’

What’s it like to be an ultra rich Asian family’s daughter? Chelsea Jiang knows because she is one. Jiang is one of the stars of “Ultra Rich Asian Girls,” a purportedly unscripted reality show which follows the daughters of ultra-rich Chinese families who emigrated to Canada. Viewers get to follow the show’s stars on their luxurious and designer-filled escapades as they try to launch their careers as fashion designers and actresses. Jiang, 25, is the founder of fashion line C3 and is the mother to a son she gave birth to earlier this year. As her reality web series personality, Jiang is the orator of such gems like, “If I’m beef, I’m wagyu,” her way of saying she’s a cut above the regular by referring to the expensive fat-marbled beef commonly imported from Japan. There’s also this little exchange: Jiang: “I’m allergic to carbs.” Co-Star: “Carbs? You mean gluten?” Jiang: “Yeah, gluten.” “I’m Chinese, grew up in Canada, UBC math degree, lived in Beijing, Hunan, and Vancouver,” Jiang tol

ACTIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd.” I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives. ” He looked at me and said, “Hey thanks!” There was a big smile on his
