China has announced a month-long crackdown on those who spread"illegal and harmful information" on the country's popular instant messaging services. The State Internet Information Office said Wednesday the campaign will target those with public accounts on services such as WeChat, which has over 800 total million users. The statement said the campaign will focus on"those spreading rumors and information related to violence, terrorism, and pornography, as well as those using instant messaging for fraud." It did not specify what censorship measures would be taken, but said service providers would be held accountable if they do not comply with the government's demands. China already blocks many popular foreign social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, forcing its citizens to use domestic, more easily controlled alternatives. Four out of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, have been released by the Boko Haram. The Chairman, Chibok Local government Council, Mr. Bana Lawan, said on Wednesday that the girls fell ill and were released by their captors. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Lawan gave the information in Abuja at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting for validation of draft humanitarian response plan for the abducted girls. The meeting was organised by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). He said the girls were released on Tuesday to bring the number of those that had regained their freedom to 57. Lawan commended Nigerians for showing concern and support for Chibok people, saying the support had restored the hope and aspiration of the people for the return of peace to the community. Missing Embu County Assembly Speaker Kariuki Mate was on Friday morning dumped alive in Lumuru. He was later rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi where he is receiving treatment. Police say he was later brought to the Gigiri police station unconscious at midnight and no more arrest has been made. Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue says the speaker was initially found in Limuru near St Paul's University while unconscious and taken to the police station by a canter that was transporting sweet potatoes to Nairobi. "The occupants of the canter say he flagged them down while looking drunk but smart and told them he was the missing speaker before they helped him to Gigiri police station. He is ok now," said Kibue. Mate went missing on Monday from Utalii hotel, Nairobi after he was picked up by a car that sped off. A police officer has since been charged with his abduction.
